Holiday@Home

‘Holiday @ Home’ was part of Tetbury’s award winning submission to the Gloucestershire Rural Community Council ‘Village of the Year’ for 2014. Tetbury won the section of “Supporting older people and regarding them as an asset.

Holiday @ Home was started in 2004 by the members at Christ Church, following encouragement from the Methodist Bristol District Evangelism Enabler, Derek Norton.

The following year, to help with the event, various other folk from the other Tetbury churches joined in. The project thereafter was headed up by the Tetbury Area Churches Together (TACT).

The project is to provide those in the town, who do not really get a holiday, a chance for a ‘day out’ , but on Christ Church’s premises. Each year is ‘themed’: By the Seaside, Down on the Farm; The Olympics; Past Times; The Oscars and more…

Following are extracts from the local magazine ‘The Tetbury Advertiser’

“Some will know, we hope, about the Holiday@Home project run by Churches Together in Tetbury (TACT). This is a simple idea to provide a one day holiday for those more elderly members of our town who don’t to have a main holiday, or just don’t get out as much either because of age or disability.  The project is run over two days in August, so nearly 30 guests on each day will have the chance for a ‘day out’ – but in Tetbury!  The whole day is FREE to all the guests, as Holiday@Home is fully funded by a grant from The Feoffees of Tetbury, to whom we are really grateful. We also usually manage a couple of Tea Parties each year!

What happens – well transport is provided if needed and following a welcome drink, the day continues with activities and table games, or just a chance to chat. Photo displays of times past provide the start of numerous memories and conversations. We usually have a good sing at some point. Various other entertainments and Time for Thought carry on through the day, until  guests are taken home (with a ‘goody’ bag) at the end of the afternoon.  What have we missed out? Of course, a holiday is not the same without some good food!  A hot 3 course lunch is provided in the middle of the day, with a traditional ‘tea’ later in the afternoon. No one goes home hungry!

If you know of someone who might benefit from a day out, tell them about Holiday@Home and if they would like to be a guest, let us know and we’ll arrange for an invitation. If you are reading this for yourself and think you would like to come, again please do contact us.
